Porsche AG is a German automobile manufacturer that specializes in high-performance. From sports cars to sedans, even SUVs, Porsche was not always in manufacturing. In 1931, Porsche opened its doors as an automotive consultation service for other automotive manufacturers. One of the very first jobs that Porsche took on was consulting for the German people in what ultimately became the Volkswagen Beetle.
Using the components of the VW Beetle, Ferdinand Porsche and his team of engineers then began construction of one of the first Porsche automobiles, the 64. With the belief that he could build faster than other manufactures, the early Porsche models were small and fast.
Porsche would go on to produce several designs for heavy tanks during WWII and create the road certified steel body 356 in 1948. Slowly replacing VW parts with those of Porsche, the world turned its head in a new direction as Porsche innovated the automobile industry with components such as the air-cool rear engine. Innovations continued, and in 1989, the Porsche 911 introduced the world to the first Tiptronic, four-wheel drive transmission.
Today, Porsche and VW continue their relationship with the Porsche Cayenne. Introduced in 2002, this model shares its chassis with the VW Touareg as well as the Audi Q7. In 2011, the two companies merged to form an Integrated Automotive Group.
